The Three-Layer Consciousness Stack
Most people debug at the story layer.
The real bug is usually in state.
And the real fix is always in signal.
The Stack
Three layers. Not metaphor — architecture:
Signal — the raw input before interpretation. Sensation, charge, somatic data. Pre-verbal. Pre-narrative. The body’s own telemetry.
State — the nervous system’s current configuration. Fight, freeze, flow. Not chosen. Inherited and reactive.
Story — the narrative constructed after the fact to explain what just happened in signal and state.
Kha-Ba-La Map
This stack is Kha-Ba-La in diagnostic mode:
Signal = Ba. The body transmitting. State = La. The grooved response pattern. Inertia made electrical. Story = Kha. The observer constructing meaning.
Everyone starts therapy at Story. The Anatomist starts at Signal.
Why Story Fails
Story-layer debugging looks like this: “I react because my father was emotionally unavailable.”
Correct narrative. Zero operational value.
Because the reaction fires at Signal speed — 80 milliseconds — and the story arrives at Story speed — 800 milliseconds. By the time you’ve narrated the origin, the defense has already completed its full sequence.
State As Bottleneck
State is the invisible layer. It determines which signals you even register and which stories become available.
In high cortisol state, only threat-signals pass the filter. In parasympathetic coherence, the same signal reads as information, not danger.
You don’t have a perception problem. You have a state problem that determines your perception.
The Signal Intervention
Practical: for one day, track signal before story.
Every time you notice a reaction — anger, withdrawal, urgency — pause at the sensation layer. Where in the body. What quality (heat, contraction, vibration, numbness). What direction (rising, sinking, expanding, collapsing).
Name the signal. Not the story about the signal. The signal itself.
What Changes
When you read signal directly, state becomes visible. When state becomes visible, story stops running on autopilot.
You don’t change the story. You change the layer you read at.
The Anatomist’s first principle: the resolution of your intervention determines the resolution of your result.

Signal. State. Story. Ba. La. Kha.
Most frameworks hand you a better story. This one hands you access to the layer where stories get authored.
